Qualifications

Additions to the requirements to grade are as follows (effective 2008):

Additions to the requirements to grade are as follows (effective 2005):

  • To grade to 2nd dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 2 tournaments since being promoted to 1st dan.
  • To grade to 3rd dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 3 tournaments since being promoted to 2nd dan.
  • To grade to 4th dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 4 tournaments since being promoted to 3rd dan.
  • To grade to 5th dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 5 tournaments since being promoted to 5th dan.
  • To grade to 6th dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 6 tournaments since being promoted to 5th dan.
    To grade to 7th dan you must be a current ITFNZ Umpire and have umpired at 7tournaments since being promoted to 6th dan.

NB Umpiring can be as a referee, judge or jury, for at least half the duration of the tournament.

Credit Point Changes

Credit points are now separated into "Attendance Credits" and "Contribution Credits".

Attendance Credits are gained by attending such things as ITFNZ tournaments, camps, seminars and other events outside of normal club trainings. Contribution Credits are gained by contributing to the organisation, by assisting with such things as umpiring, instructing or organising events.

  • Those testing for 1st dan must accumulate 10 Attendance or Contribution Credit points since joining ITFNZ.
  • Those testing for 2nd dan must accumulate 5 Contribution Credit points since being promoted to 1st dan.
  • Those testing for 3rd dan must accumulate 10 Contribution Credit points since being promoted to 2nd dan.
  • Those testing for 4th dan must accumulate 15 Contribution Credit points since being promoted to 3rd dan.
  • Those testing for 5th dan must accumulate 20 Contribution Credit points since being promoted to 4th dan.
  • Those testing for 6th dan must accumulate 25 Contribution Credit points since being promoted to 5th dan.

Examples of Credit Points

Attendance Credits

  • Participating in a tournament, camp, seminar or demonstration, outside of normal club training sessions. 1 point each.

Contribution Credits

  • Assisting with instructing or other regular duties at club - 1 point
  • Community service - 1 point
  • Writing an article for TKD Talk Magazine - 1 point
  • Umpiring at a tournament - 1 point
  • Instructing at a camp or seminar - 1 point

Gold Points

Each Gold point is the equivalent of 10 Contribution Credit points, plus entitles you to a $10 rebate from your grading fee.

  • 10 Contribution Credit Points - 1 gold point
  • Being an official Assistant Instructor (new)
    (Note: To be an Official Assistant Instructor you must hold an ITFNZ Instructors Certificate.
  • Organising a Regional Camp or Tournament - 1 gold point
  • Organising a National Tournament, Camp or Seminar - 2 Gold Points
  • Being a member of an ITFNZ Sub-Committee - 2 Gold Points
  • Being a member of the Executive Committee - 1 Gold Point per year
    (since last grading)
  • Being a Director of a Sub-Committee - 1 Gold Point per year
    (since last grading)
  • Being an Instructor - 1 Gold Point per year
    (since last grading)

 


Summary of the main changes 2006
- Age change for junior to under 18 (was under 14). Modified breaking requirements are below.

- Simplified heights for special technique breaks - male and female are now the same.

- 1st Step Sparring requirement is to do all techniques on both right and left side, with the exception of 2nd dans testing for 3rd dan, where only one side is required. Candidates should demonstrate around 6 techniques on both sides.

Modified Destruction Requirements

(Items with in red are new, items with text struck out has now been deleted from the syllabus)

Testing for 1st dan:

Power test:
a. Hand - downward punch
Men: 6 tiles. Women: 3 tiles. Juniors: front elbow strike - 2 boards.
(Women and those under 18 have the option of using a knifehand instead of the forefist. Juniors must select an alternative to the hand break, eg twisting kick)
b. Foot - side piercing kick
Men: 3 boards. Women & Juniors: 2 boards.

Special technique:
a. Flying high kick - 1 board
Men: board at fingertip height with the arm extended above the head. Women & juniors: (Men & Women the same)
Men, Women & Juniors: Board at forefist height with the arm extended above the head.
b. Overhead kick - 1 board
Men: Male: over 5 people. Women & Juniors: Female: over 3 people.

Testing for 2nd dan:

Power test:
a. Hand - knifehand strike
Men: 2 boards. Women: 1 board. Juniors: back piercing kick - 2 boards
b. Foot - turning kick
Men: 3 boards. Women & Juniors: 2 boards.

Special technique:
a. Flying turning kick - 1 board
Men: bottom of the board at top of head height standing.
Women & juniors:
Men, Women and Juniors: Top of board at top of head height standing.
b. Flying reverse turning kick - 1 board
Men: bottom of the board at top of head height standing.
Women & juniors:
Men, Women and Juniors: Top of board at top of head height standing.

Testing for 3rd dan:

Power test:
a. Hand - reverse knifehand strike
Men: 2 boards. Women: 1 board. Juniors: Twisting kick - 2 boards
b. Foot - reverse turning kick
Men: 3 boards. Women & juniors: 2 boards.

Special technique:
a. Mid-air kick - 1 board
Men: bottom of the board at top of head height standing.
Women & juniors:
Men, Women and Juniors: Top of board at top of the head height standing.
b. Flying double, consecutive or combination kick of your own choice - at least 2 boards. Degree of difficulty taken into consideration.

NB Examiners may allow small juniors to use "junior boards"
