Summarised notes from Gen. Choi Seminar held
Jan 1998
By Paul McPhail
These are notes taken by Paul McPhail during and after
the course. They are not official, nor do they indicate any changes to
techniques they are often just reminders of things brought up on
the course.
Fundamental Exercises and Leading the Class
Bowing: hold the correct attention position and bow to 15 degrees
watch opponents eyes
Give commands such as "Side piercing kick READY" and
have the class assume the correct ready stance for that particular technique.
Teach easy to hard, spot exercises first (to correct students) then stepping
(forward and backward) to allow practice. Any techniques can be performed
on the turn always explain what you want.
Use hip/abdomen to mobilise the entire body.
General Technique
Read vol.2 of encyclopedia for correct measuring and distance for all
basic techniques.
Side blocks have the blocking tool at chest line
High attacks have fist or fingertip (not the attacking tool) at the eye
level of the attacker (same as for blocking)
Dont bend fist forward on punch. Punching board (and humans) lean
slightly forward which allows for correct contact angle.
Hooking blocks explained blocking tool depends on distance, from
far to closer distance: Knifehand, Back hand, Palm, Under forearm
W-Shape blocks explained blocking tool depends on height, from
high to low: Rev knifehand, knifehand, outer forearm, inner forearm
Double forearm blocks begin with front arm lower than back arm which
is about shoulder height
Patterns - General
Dont call the name of the pattern at the start of the pattern
Fast motion movements have no downward sine wave motion between them
Patterns Specific
CHON JI
Use more hip on inner forearm block
DO SAN
On turn move foot on 45 degree angle to center line
Relax hands before straight fingertip thrust
hands quite open
WON-HYO
Use sine wave before bending ready stance
No downward knee spring before circular block
Side kick dont have to pull other hand
to hip just natural
YUL GOK
Movement 1 & 4 slight crossing of arms
Backfist on X-stance is half facing, both feet pointing
to 45 degrees
JOONG-GUN
Rearfoot stance back foot 15 degrees, front foot
25 degrees
Upward block circular motion
Pressing block both arms shoulder line, bottom
arm bending at elbow rather than at the wrist
Upper elbow no need to have twisting action
Low pushing block pushing action
Knee drop body down use sine wave, bend
supporting leg slightly
TOI GYE
Side back strike arm vertical
Low pushing block to push away leg
HWA RANG
Side kick application kick to ribs as opponent
turns to side. Weight 50/50 as foot moves up before kick
L-stance punch in line with front foot
CHOONG MOO
Checking block comes straight in, not up
KWANG GAE
On first double step move foot 15 degrees as you move
off, not before
Stamping motion on backfist looks like checking kick
action
Use more body on front snap kicks not just leg
action
Slow motion techniques gradually increase in speed
PO EUN
Continuous motion flowing breathing
Ge BAEK
Hold twisting kick (and also on any hooking or crescent
kicks)
No circular motion on low rev knifehand/knifehand blocks
EUI AM
Downwardblock/rising block no downward sinewave
in between
Alternate palm block to front with body slightly angled
Reverse turning kicks stop at 45 degrees to control
CHOONG JANG
First movement top arm vertical
After front snap kick, slowly pull back elbow, hand
and foot together.
Lift foot high for stamping motion
JUECHE
Leg slightly bent on rev. hooking kick
Application of flying double punch opponent ducks
first punch
Flying reverse turning kick (while flying away) should
say "dodging" reverse turning kick
Knifehand downward strike arm straight
Pick shape kick supporting foot can turn slightly
SAM IL
Sweep keep foot low
MOON MOO
Side pushing kick indicates moving the foot in quick
motion". Is this the same as fast motion? "No fast
motion is more attacking
"
SO SAN
release done with fingertips just reaching the 2nd
knuckles of the fist
Sparring
3 STEP
after measure step back to attention, then back to low
block. Dont have to measure again.
Use 2 way 3 step sparring (military tactics)
1 STEP
Attacker decides technique to attack with
Distance is flexible
