ITFNZ Techniques Handbook

The handbook is in PDF format - and available for Instructors to download from the Instructors Only Page

Background

ITFNZ have published an updated techniques syllabus and theory handbook - combined into one booklet. It contains all the techniques and theory coloured belts should know at each level.

A BIG thank you to Mr Mark Banicevich, 3rd dan, who has worked many hours with Mr McPhail on this handbook.

Largely the syllabus is the same, but there are some improvements. Here is list of what's new:

  • Terminology has now nearly all been removed from each grade's theory, and instead the student must know the terminology for the techniques as they learn them. There is about the same amount of Korean to learn as before, and hopefully instructors will use more terminology when teaching.

  • 3 step sparring for white belts has been added, plus the new breaks that were introduced in 1998.

  • 3 step is clarified as to one way, two way, with partner etc. Two way alone added to green stripes as this was missed. Clarified the 7th gup 3 step to (a) one way with kicks and (b) two way with hands.

  • Pattern diagrams added

  • A few techniques have changed places, a few required techniques are different.
e.g. back kick is now in green stripe as a compulsory technique instead of pick shape, Side rising has moved from 10th to 9th.

  • Added some movements that were previously missing from the syllabus such as: ready stances (eg close ready stance B at 4th gup) and foot shifting.

  • Terminology added to or moved, such as: foot parts, leading class terminology moved to red belt and a new terminology section at the back as reference.

  • Self defence is now included in the coloured belt syllabus -divided into easy to learn amounts at each level. Instructors are free to teach any techniques they like against these defences. Releases contained within the patterns have also been added - to encourage instructors to teach the applications of the pattern movements.

  • We are now encouraging single counter attacks in step sparring, so we have changed the wording of the green and blue stripe one step from "combinations" to "foot or hand attacks". They can do hand techniques, as long as they do their compulsory.

The new syllabus is effective immediately, and will be tested at the August grading, 1999.
