ITFNZ Techniques Handbook

Updated 2006

Techniques Handbook 2006

The 2006 edition of the Techniques handbook is a major re-write of the syllabus and the addition of a Terminology CD. All ITFNZ members will be issued a new handbook in 2006 free of charge so you can be kept up to date with the latest changes.

Amendments to the Syllabus

Theory

For each grade, there are now only around half a dozen Korean terms to learn. The terms will be relevant to each grade. eg. 10th gup will learn “do bok, do jang, nopunde, kaunde, najunde, jirigi, makgi and sogi”. In the back cover of the handbook is included a Terminology CD so you can now here how the words are pronounced. There will now be more oral terminology testing at gradings.

The new terminology follows the following basic pattern:
10th gup - basic techniques
9th gup - basic stances
8th gup - basic attacking and blocking tools
7th gup - basic kicks
6th gup - more advanced blocks
5th gup - more advanced kicks
4th gup - more advanced stances
3rd gup - advanced blocks
2nd gup - procedure for leading the class

Basic techniques and Step Sparring
The syllabus is now more simple. For example, 7th gup previously learnt the reverse turning kick, but this has now been moved to green belt level. Vertical, downward and skip kicks have all been moved up to higher levels. Some hand techniques have also been moved to more appropriate grades.

The new step sparring syllabus reduces the number of compulsory techniques from four to three and uses mainly the more basic techniques.

Destruction
This has been re-arranged so that blue belts perform hand techniques, red stripes basic kicks and red belts flying kicks.

All ITFNZ members will be issued with a new handbook through their club early 2006, or you can purchase a handbook from Paul M Taekwon-Do. Instructors can download the handbook via the Instructors only page.

Black Belt Handbook
The black belt handbook is also under-going some changes and will be printed early 2006. One major change will be the age for Junior Black belt which is changing from under 14 to under 18 years old. This means no hand breaks if you are under 18 years old without special permission of the Instructor or parent.
